I cannot but feel grateful for the liberal view which their Lordships have taken of my time in service, whilst at the same time I am seriously embarrassed to know how I am to provide for myself in the dark future, should I continue in my present state of health.

As there is still a hope that my present malady may prevail this Summer under a course of Medical treatment; the temperate climate will test decisively whether I can conscientiously undertake duties again or not; and as leave is only granted in accordance with ordinary rules and is only for six months additional, I beg most humbly to supplicate His Lordship the Duke of Newcastle to grant me this grace; and to extend the period of my leave for six months under present arrangements.
